Chapter 16

Monday morning – Leonie

I sat up, unsure of where I was but certain I was safe because I could sense Perry. As I glanced around the room it came back to me. I’d had a nightmare and Perry had brought me to the hospital. I smiled at the sight of him, asleep on a reclining chair beside the bed. If he was here, relaxed and asleep, I had nothing to worry about. Andrew was standing by the slightly open door. As he beckoned to me, I slid off the bed and went to join him.

“How are you feeling?” he asked me. “Do you know why you are here?”

“I’m fine,” I said. “I had a nightmare. Perry said I had a fever but I feel okay now.”

Andrew nodded. “That’s right. Come over to the office and I’ll check you over.” He grinned at me. “I shouldn’t really have let you out of bed, but I’m pretty sure you’re fine and I didn’t want to disturb Perry.”

Nor did I.

Andrew put his hand on the small of my back and guided me into the office. Once he had examined me he asked if he could put one of the little monitor discs on me. It didn’t bother me and if it made him happier I was fine with it. Then he suggested we went to find some breakfast.

“What about Perry?” I asked.

“Let’s not disturb him. He needs to sleep. We’ll leave him a note and someone will tell him where we are anyway. He can come find us.”

I wasn’t quite sure about leaving Perry, but I was hungry so I went along with Andrew. The café wasn’t far from where we were. On the way he asked me gently if I knew what had caused my nightmare, if there was anything I thought likely to have led to it. I was pretty sure it was to do with worrying about losing Perry but I didn’t know how to admit that.

“It’s about Perry, isn’t it?” Andrew asked. “Would it help to talk about it?”

I nodded. Andrew was easy to talk to and he always seemed to understand where I was coming from, perhaps because of how he felt about Perry.

“Okay,” he said, thinking for a moment. “The canteen’s not the best place, though, and it won’t be long before Perry finds us. After we’ve eaten I’ll send him off to fetch you some fresh clothes and things and we’ll talk privately then.”

He was right; it wasn’t long before Perry joined us. We’d only just started our breakfasts when he slid into the seat next to me, put his arm round me and hugged me close.

“Feeling better?” he asked.

I guessed he could tell I was because he barely waited for an answer before turning to Andrew. “I thought you’d run off with my girl.” He was smiling so it was obviously just part of their usual banter.

“That’d be a first,” said Andrew. “Now, you running off with my girl, that happened often enough, just not the other way around.
